Dunkirk is the Northern most town in Calvert County and is home to many who commute into the Washington DC/Baltimore/Northern
Virginia areas to work. Mostly rural, we've welcomed a new shopping center within the past 2 years – bringing the total to 2 that are of
any size. Yes, we have the Walmart and the huge Giant and Safeway food stores. We still lack a department store where you can purchase
clothing, cosmetics, etc.
Considering the current population of about 6,900, we only really have one restaurant, along with a few scattered fast food and smaller
eating establishments. We are within minutes, however, to Chesapeake Beach and North Beach where we can take our pick of many
restaurants.
Most of our communities are divided into about one acre home sites. Some of the older subdivisions have smaller lot sizes. This is
because our zoning code has been changed in recent years to discourage development. There are still many new home communities
with an average sales price of about $569,000 for all homes, including resales. Our home appreciated slowed within the past year
(2007 to 2008) to -5.9% so the economic conditions have affected Southern Maryland as it has other parts of our State.
Our citizens have access to an awesome recreational park with activities for all ages. We also have access to the Patuxent River in a
few of our communities and a couple of our communities have sizable lakes for residents to enjoy.
Calvert County schools are regarding as some of the best in the State. We see many families moving here for our schools as well
as our close proximity to their places of employment.
